# Mary

Our Lady of Loreto

Marble screen around the Holy House

Our Lady of Loreto or Loretto, is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary which is associated with a house where Mary was born, experienced the Annunciation and where the Holy Family lived. This tradition of the Holy House comes from the Apostolic times. It is said that in the 13th century the house was moved from Nazareth to several places and finally landing in Loreto, Italy by angels. This was to protect it from destruction by Moslems who destroyed the previous basilica that housed it. A basilica is now built around the Holy House in Italy and is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the world. On the door of the basilica it is written " The whole world has no place more sacred... For here was the Word made Flesh, and here was born the Virgin Mother." Our Lady of Loreto is the patron saint of aviators, fliers, pilots and builders.
