Saint Luigi Orione

Advocate of the Poor and of Orphans

The 12th of March is the feast day of Saint Luigi Orione (23 June, 1872 – 12 March 1940).

Saint Luigi Orione was born in northern Italy and entered the Franciscan friary when he was 13 years old. However, he left due to ill health and became a pupil of Saint John Bosco in the Turin oratory for boys. He later entered the diocesan seminary and opened his opened his own oratory and boarding school for training and educating boys. He founded other pious congregations for clergy and lay people as well as two religious orders. He cared for the sick, disabled, and the poor and was a confessor, a preacher and organiser of pilgrimages, missions, as well as processions. His apostolate now has 300 foundations, which includes schools, hospitals and assisted living facilities, and learning centres on almost every continent. His body is incorrupt. He was canonised in 2004.
